Ensuring that Programme and Project Managers have the right skills to successfully deliver initiatives is critical to organisational success. Poorly delivered projects can negatively impact profitability, expose organisations to legal risk, and damage reputations.

At the same time, experienced project resources are scarce. Many organisations cannot afford to remove key personnel from mission-critical projects for extended training programmes. This creates a clear need for practical, on-the-job capability development.

Our Philosophy

We believe effective Project Managers require a balanced skill set across four key areas:

  • People and leadership skills
  • Business and commercial awareness
  • Project and programme management methodologies
  • Core project management theory and best practice

PM Academy addresses these needs through structured mentoring and skills assessments, delivered by experienced Programme and Project Management professionals.

How Our Mentoring and Skills Assessment Works

1. Confirm Scope and Contract

We work with your organisation to confirm and finalise the mentoring and assessment scope, ensuring alignment with your specific business and delivery requirements. These requirements are formally documented, and the engagement is contractually agreed.

2. Conduct Skills Assessment

Our specialists assess the current capabilities of Programme Managers, Project Managers, and Project Administrators through structured interviews and evaluations.
Assessments are aligned to recognised project and programme management standards and frameworks, including:

  • Programme and Project Management methodologies
  • Portfolio and governance practices
  • Agile and traditional delivery approaches

A skills gap analysis is produced by comparing current competencies with the desired capability levels. We then agree on appropriate development approaches.

3. Prioritise Skills Development

Identified skills gaps are prioritised based on business impact and role requirements. A practical, role-specific skills development action plan is created.

4. Allocate a Dedicated Mentor

Each participant is matched with a suitable mentor based on experience, industry context, and delivery environment. This ensures strong rapport and accelerates learning through relevant, real-world guidance.

5. Conduct Mentoring

Mentoring is delivered while participants continue working on live projects. Support may include:

  • On-site mentoring
  • Virtual mentoring sessions
  • Email and telephonic guidance

This ensures learning is immediately applied to real project challenges.

6. Confirm Skills Achieved

Progress is reviewed, and achieved competencies are documented. The action plan is refined as needed to ensure continued relevance and maximum benefit.

7. Contractual Closure

A Skills Achievement Report is issued, summarising progress, outcomes, and recommendations. The engagement is formally concluded with clear evidence of capability improvement.

Why This Approach Works

  • Minimal disruption to project delivery
  • Skills developed in real project environments
  • Faster capability uplift
  • Tangible, measurable outcomes

“He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool, shun him.
He who knows not and knows he knows not is a student, teach him.
He who knows and knows not he knows is asleep, wake him.
He who knows and knows he knows is wise, follow him.”
